Serenity – Pawtuckaway State Park

Pawtuckaway State Park

After Portland, we needed a little pick me up, something camping always provides.  Though the weather was starting to exclude camping from our list of activities, we decided on one more go before Boston.  Lucky for us, we found Pawtuckaway State Park.

Pawtuckaway State Park

Pawtuckaway (it’s looks so much harder to say than it is) park was simply awesome.  we were a bit worried that it was too late in the season for a proper fall camp, but the leaves were wonderful and the temperature was great.  Since it was late in the season, too, the campground was sparsely populated.  It was awesome.

After a loooooong road down to check-in, a group of extremely nice young rangers and their dog checked us in and gave us the lay of the land.  The three camping loops take up small islands on the Southeast corner of the grounds and are all very close to the lake.  most of the sites are actually right next to the lake.  There is a beach, but hiking and canoeing are also very popular here.  I pined for a canoe after 24 hours.

But this state park is just so mindbogglingly gorgeous that just walking around the campsite proved to entertain us all day long.  The leaves were a perfect yellow and the lake gave us not just beautiful sunrises, but stunning sunsets as well.  It was simply superb.

This place must be insanely busy during the summer months, but during the off-season it’s a reminder of why we all go camping.
